The post-screening conversation:
This conversation will begin with tracing Tammy Cheung’s and Huang Ting-fu’s journey of documentary filmmaking. Tammy Cheung is one of the most iconic figures in the history of Hong Kong documentary filmmaking. Her films, including Rice Distribution (2003), Secondary School (2002), and July (2004), document important junctures in the history of Hong Kong. Huang Ting-fu, often described as being one of a kind, produces exceptional documentaries and was nominated in many prestigious film festivals in the world. His films, including Nail (2002) and Yellow Box (2006), demonstrate his personal take on direct cinema. Yellow Box, in particular, obtained a special mention at Visions du Réel, one of the world's most renowned documentary film festivals.
Both Cheung and Huang are known for their unique takes on direct cinema. In this panel discussion, we look forward to hearing their insights regarding the power of moving images in capturing the pulse of society and all its changes. This will be one of the more in-depth discussions of the works of the two great directors following our ‘Vicissitudes’ parallel screenings.

Born in Kinmen in 1961, HUANG Ting-Fu made his first film in 1985 with his regular 8mm camera and has been making documentaries since. He graduated in Broadcasting and Television from the National Taiwan College of Art in 1988, and worked as a film archivist until 2016. HUANG currently works as a freelance filmmaker.

Tammy Cheung is a Hong Kong documentary filmmaker, who founded Visible Record Limited and the Chinese Documentary Festival in 2008. In 2019, the Festival was expanded into an international film festival. It has been renamed as the Hong Kong International Documentary Festival.

A believer in collaborative research between the film industry and academics, this work developed from Fraser’s MSc in Media Management, where he focused on working with the understanding of "curation as research". He holds a PhD in Screen Studies from the University of Manchester, and joined the MSc Film, Exhibition and Curation in 2020.

The panel aims to inspire an interest in Taiwan and Hong Kong documentary films by placing the films from two places in a broader framework, i.e., respective developments of documentary films in Taiwan and Hong Kong and how they contrast and form conversations. Dr. Pin-chuan Chen and Dr. Victor Fan will open the discussion by giving an overview of documentary movements in Taiwan and Hong Kong respectively, how Taiwan and Hong Kong documentaries respectively engage with and address their unique social and political circumstances, accompanied by commentaries on the confluence and divergence of their documentaries between two places.
One of the parallels between the development of Taiwanese and Hong Kong documentaries is the establishment of Full Shot Studio in Taiwan and Hong Kong Visible Record. Full Shot Studio was set up in 1988 to provide training opportunities to young documentary filmmakers. In the millennium, Tammy Cheung set up Hong Kong Visible Record to promote documentary filmmaking with a similar framework. As our guest speaker, Tammy will share her views on the parallels between the two documentary institutes and her experience creating and promoting documentary films in Hong Kong.Pre-recorded discussions with two of the crucial members of Full Shot Studio, Li Zhong-Wang and Tsai Ching-ju, will be played at the panel, where they share their documentary films to date and their observations of Taiwanese documentaries. This panel discussion is co-organised by King’s College London, Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh, and HKFFUK.

Victor Fan is Reader in Film and Media Philosophy at the Department of Film Studies, King’s College London. He was Assistant Professor at the Department of East Asian Studies, McGill University. He is the author of Cinema Approaching Reality: Locating Chinese Film Theory (University of Minnesota Press, 2015), Extraterritoriality: Locating Hong Kong Cinema and Media (Edinburgh University Press, 2019), and Cinema Illuminating Reality: Media Philosophy through Buddhism (University of Minnesota Press, 2022).

Former Director of the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI, formerly known as the Taiwan Film Institute; TFI) and academic scholar specialising in Taiwanese documentary and film archive. Pin-Chuan received his PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London in 2014. He was Assistant Professor at Chaoyang University of Technology (Taichung, Taiwan) where he teaches film and documentary-making, as well as film theory. One of his research interests is focusing on the use of film / documentary-making as a method of social engagement. In addition to fifteen years’ experience in higher education, Pin-Chuan was appointed Director of the TFI between 2016 and 2019, where he dedicated his time to film preservation and restoration. Currently, he is the Director of the Cultural Division at the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, where he is responsible for organising cultural exchanges and promoting Taiwan’s film heritage to a global audience.

Tammy Cheung is a Hong Kong documentary filmmaker. Cheung founded Visible Record Limited with other like-minded individuals from the fields of film, culture and education. In 2008, she founded the Chinese Documentary Festival. In 2019, the Festival was expanded into an international film festival. It’s renamed as the Hong Kong International Documentary Festival.
